9V battery leaked in a Melnor timer for sprinkler. Is it dangerous to try new battery before trashing timer?

Hubby left thing in garage where I discovered it. I removed old battery and wiped off excess leakage. Can I stick another battery in there to 'save' the timer/avoid buying new one? I don't wanna get zapped or burned or be stupid! Thanks very much.
